Chinese Martial Arts
Without question, Tai Chi, ChiKung, and NeiKung have saved my life. By my mid 30s I had done extensive damage to my back (L5S1 compression, bulging disks, degenerative bones, etc.) through too many hours spent on an organ practice bench, schlepping keyboard and audio gear from gig to gig, being a work-a-holic, not eating properly, and being overweight. Essentially, I was looking at the end of my performance career. My doctor said that the only solution was surgery. Well, I’ve yet to meet anyone who walked away from back surgery who said “That was great! I feel 100% now!”
I chose a more holistic approach to recovery. I entered the famous CK Chu Tai Chi studio in Times
Square after having spent considerable time researching Tai Chi, looking at numerous studios, and styles of the art. After one session with Master Chu (RIP), I knew this was the place for me. The teachers there are great at demystifying the movements and postures, and the approach to teaching is very much in line with the old school approach of no more than one-movement per class to ensure that alignment, posture, and movement are in check. They teach it from the martial application, which is very different than what most other studios offer. It is difficult, but 20 pounds later, and now living a virtually pain-free life, I will dedicate the rest of my life to studying these arts
